Experiments performed on fibroblasts taken from sialidosis patients exhibited a fairly mitogenic solid response to the same doses of PDGF-BB and IGF-II as compared to fibroblasts of normal skin, indicative of the fact that NEU1 deficiency is associated with a greater number of cell surface receptors remaining sialylated and, consequently, more responsiveness to their respective growth factors (Pshezhetsky and Hinek, 2011). This evidence concerns the gene NEU1 and sialidosis.
