The pro-inflammatory environment induced by HSV fosters multisystem organ dysfunction, as manifested by abnormal electroencephalogram (EEG) findings including seizure activity and potentially neonatal encephalopathy, as well as gastrointestinal/metabolic effects such as hepatic inflammation manifested by elevations in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) with subsequent impaired glucose metabolism and hypoglycemia, correlating positively with degree of neonatal encephalopathy (O’Dea et al., 2020). This evidence concerns the gene GPT and neonatal encephalopathy.
