The first pathological descriptions of “fibrocystic disease” of the pancreas were published by Dr. Dorothy Andersen in 1938 (4), but it was not until 1989, almost four decades later, that the CFTR gene was first recognized by Riordan and colleagues, demonstrating the clear genetic basis for the multisystem phenotype of CF (5). This evidence concerns the gene CFTR and cystic fibrosis.
