In hypertensive subjects with over 55 years of age, it was observed that women carrying the TLR4 Asp299Gly polymorphism in peripheral blood leukcocytes showed lower left ventricular mass and lower prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy; however, the presence of this polymorphism in men did not affect the ventricular structure (Sales et al., 2010). The gene discussed is TLR4; the disease is left ventricular hypertrophy.
