Besides mutations in α-synuclein, familiar forms of PD might exhibit mutations in PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK) and E3 ubiquitin ligase (PARKIN), two proteins involved in autophagy (Lazarou et al., 2015; Pickrell and Youle, 2015), Parkinson’s disease protein 1 (PARK7 a redox-chaperone acting as oxidative stress sensor (Canet-Avilés et al., 2004), (Zondler et al., 2014), and leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2). Here, PRKN is linked to Parkinson disease.
