A meta-analysis by Qin et al. found that young age, female sex, parathyroid auto-transplantation, inadvertent parathyroid excision, Graves’ disease, thyroid cancer, central lymph node dissection, preoperative Vitamin D deficiency and lower postoperative 24-hour PTH levels were risk factors for transient hypocalcemia [6]. This evidence concerns the gene PTH and Graves disease.
