ALAS2 and Parkinson disease: A single ‘ferritin-like’ 5′UTR IRE was found in the mRNAs for hypoxia inducible factor 2α(HIF-2α), involved in regulation of cellular responses to hypoxia, 5-aminolevulinic acid synthase 2(ALAS2), the first enzyme of the haem biosynthetic pathway, mitochondrial aconitase, an FeS enzyme which converts citrate to isocitrate in the Krebs cycle, and two proteins reputed to contribute to the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, respectively, namely, amyloid precursor protein(APP) and α-synuclein.
