Preclinical studies have demonstrated that metformin can stabilize mast cells, upregulate the ratios of Th1/Th2 and Treg/Th17 cells, downregulate inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-13, IL-17), and increase anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10) with the possibility of attenuating asthma development [8,9]. The gene discussed is IL13; the disease is asthma.
