CGAS and infection: At the later stage of infection, the deSUMOylase SENP2 cleaves SUMO conjugates added on cGAS-K217/K464 by TRIM38 to facilitate cGAS ubiquitination and degradation, thus restraining cGAS overactivation (51), while another deSUMOylase, SENP7, through removing SUMO conjugates on mcGAS-K335/K372/K382, facilitates cGAS binding to DNA and cGAS dimer formation and subsequent interferon production (52).
