The cytoprotective effect of MANF against ischemia is not limited to neuronal cells, but the recombinant MANF protein reduced the myocardial infarct size in a mouse model of transient myocardial ischemia (Glembotski et al., 2012) as well as reduced hypoxia-induced apoptosis in rat retinal ganglion cells in vivo and in vitro (Gao et al., 2017). This evidence concerns the gene MANF and ischemia.
