Klein (2017) proved experimentally in a canine pneumonia model that “old” blood transfusion is associated with higher mortality, whereby a significant increase in nontransferrin-bound iron and cell-free Hb followed by hypertension were observed due to the NO-scavenging action of Hb and pulmonary necrosis [5]. The gene discussed is GSTM1; the disease is susceptibility to pneumonia measurement.
