Although CGAS was originally found to be required for STING1 activation during viral infection, recent studies have also reported a CGAS-independent STING1 pathway in response to different stimuli, including viral infection (Holm et al., 2016; Suschak et al., 2016; Unterholzner and Dunphy, 2019).
