Individuals with obesity exhibit chronic low-grade systemic inflammation, which is characterized by increased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines from adipose tissue, made dysfunctional by the excessive accumulation of fat into the circulation; these cytokines include interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) [3].
