In particular, Targher et al. reported a significant association between patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein-3 (PNPLA3) rs738409 polymorphism (i.e., the major genetic variant associated with greater susceptibility to NAFLD development and progression) and kidney dysfunction in a pediatric population with histologically confirmed NAFLD. Here, PNPLA3 is linked to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
