SORT1 and atherosclerosis: Follow-up studies revealed that sortilin is involved in several aspects of atherosclerosis progression, including the regulation of circulating cholesterol levels by affecting trafficking of apoB-100-containing lipoproteins in the liver, intestinal cholesterol absorption, and bile acid synthesis, as well as through its involvement in macrophage cytokine secretion, macrophage cholesterol efflux, and foam cell formation.
