Glutamine synthase is an enzyme specifically expressed in astrocytes in the CNS, which can catalyze the synthesis of glutamine from ammonia and glutamate (Rose et al., 2013), thus maintaining CNS homeostasis, but decreased or lost glutamine synthase expression was found in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (Sandhu et al., 2021), and this may be one of the possible mechanisms for inducing seizures. This evidence concerns the gene GLUL and temporal lobe epilepsy.
