The Toll-like receptors (TLRs), which are highly expressed in macrophages and skeletal muscle cells, TLR2/4 and TLR7/8/9 in particular, are known to play a prominent role in the sustained chronic inflammation exhibited by the muscle tissue in DMD (De Paepe, 2020). The gene discussed is TLR2; the disease is Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
