AS3MT has been extensively studied for its role in the detoxification of arsenic, although little is known about its function in neurons despite AS3MT being highly expressed during brain development and genetic variation within the gene being robustly associated with schizophrenia (Schizophrenia Working Group of the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, 2014; Pardiñas et al., 2018; Duarte et al., 2016). This evidence concerns the gene AS3MT and schizophrenia.
