Compared with mild-type COVID-19 patients, severe-type patients who experienced cytokine storms had higher levels of CRP and IL-6, which are characterized by high levels of granulocyte colony stimulating factor, interferon-inducible protein-10, monocyte chemotactic Protein-1, macrophage inflammatory protein-1α/β, IL-8, and other cytokines, which can promote chemotaxis or apoptosis of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets, leading to a decrease in cell numbers (56–59). The gene discussed is CRP; the disease is COVID-19.
