Zn deficiency causes anemia because the Zn finger protein GATA-1 is involved in the differentiation and proliferation of erythroblasts [2]. Zn deficiency, therefore, impairs erythroblast differentiation and proliferation, resulting in anemia [2]. However, participants in the present study had a low weight SDS possibly because of anemia due to nutritional deficiencies other than Zn. This evidence concerns the gene GATA1 and anemia.
