Elevated transcript levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-18 and IL-1β have been observed in the brains of AD patients (Ojala et al., 2009; Saresella et al., 2016) and the secretion of these cytokines is modulated by inflammasomes that are caspase-1 activating multi-protein complexes involved in the activation of the innate immune response and cell death via pyroptosis (Kelley et al., 2019). This evidence concerns the gene CASP1 and Alzheimer disease.
