Numerous investigators have documented the potential cytotoxic stimuli that contribute to the RGC death in glaucoma, including neurotrophin deprivation, glutamate excitotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, glial activation, inflammation, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, ischemia, and oxidative stress (Almasieh et al., 2012; Almasieh and Levin, 2017).
