The reduced expression of ERBB4 did not likely rely on increased DNA methylation, since the ERBB4 promoter appeared hypomethylated both in normal and tumor samples with only a minimal increase in oncologic specimens compared to normal tissue (please consult the “Material and methods” section for further details about hypomethylation status) (Supplementary Figure S1C).
