SREBF1 and cancer: These lactate-rich cancer cells has been found to deactivate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), leading to upregulation of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1) and downstream stearoyl-coenzyme A (CoA) desaturase-1 (SCD1), which enhance the production of monounsaturated fatty acids with anti-ferroptosis properties (Zhao et al., 2020b).
