As aPC inhibits NF-κB (nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells) signaling [37,51,52] and as NF-κB induces the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNFα [53], we propose that aPC restricts NF-κB signaling to avert the production of inflammatory cytokines within atherosclerotic lesions in the setting of diabetes mellitus. This evidence concerns the gene TNF and diabetes mellitus.
