Polymorphisms in CARD8 leading to decreased expression of CARD8 were also connected to the severity of rheumatoid arthritis and gout (reviewed in [9]); however, in this case, CARD8 does not act as an inflammasome sensor but rather as a potential inhibitory regulator of NLRP3 [82].
