Inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) are chronically released in DM subjects and in turn lead to a cascade of inflammatory reactions causing chronic inflammation, buildup of collagen and other extracellular matrix components which, in the end, may result in fibrosis [12,13,14,15]. This evidence concerns the gene TNF and diabetes mellitus.
