To date, nothing is known about effects of SMOC1 in macrophages, but SMOC1 expression is at least partly regulated by miR-223 [59], and decreased levels of miR-223 in monocytes/macrophages have been linked with atherosclerosis and macrophage activation [60,61,62], as well as the transition between inflammation and cancer [63,64]. This evidence concerns the gene SMOC1 and atherosclerosis.
