Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have shown that the p53 (TP53) and p21 genes (Cdkn1a display single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in NAFLD patients, resulting in the increased expression of these genes and the inhibition of cell cycle progression as observed in senescent cells [62,83]. This evidence concerns the gene CDKN1A and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
