Park et al. (2021) showed that a subset of HIV-1 protease inhibitors (nelfinavir, saquinavir, lopinavir and ritonavir) reduced the levels of HPV16 E6 and E7 oncoproteins in both CaSki and NIKS16 cells. The reduction of E6 and E7 oncoproteins correlated with increased levels of wild type p53 and HPV-positive cervical cancer cell death. Restored p53 resulted with enhanced apoptosis and accumulation of cells arrested in the G1 phase (Park et al., 2021). The gene discussed is TP53; the disease is cervical cancer.
