IGF1 and diabetic retinopathy: In mouse OIR models, endothelial cell specific IGF1 receptor KO mice show reduced retinal NV (Kondo et al., 2003), and overexpression of IGF1 in the retina results in phenotypic changes similar to those of diabetic retinopathy (pericyte loss, capillary basement membrane thickness, inner retinal microaneurysms, and neovessels) (Ruberte et al., 2004).
