IFI16 and AIM2 nucleoprotein filaments are highly stable and persist even after the dsDNA template has been degraded by nucleases (Antiochos et al., 2018; Matyszewski et al., 2018), and impaired clearance of NETs by DNase I has been observed in some SLE patients (Hakkim et al., 2010).
