In humans, alterations of this protamine ratio (PRM1:PRM2) have been associated with male sub- and infertility (Aoki et al., 2005; Balhorn et al., 1988; Belokopytova et al., 1993; Bench et al., 1998; de Yebra et al., 1998; García-Peiró et al., 2011; Khara et al., 1997; Ni et al., 2016; Oliva, 2006; Steger et al., 2001; Steger et al., 2003; Steger et al., 2008; Torregrosa et al., 2006).
