Loss of key mitophagy proteins that are involved in mitochondrial clearance has been shown to cause PD, as well as a significant proportion of genes encoding PD proteins associated with the autophagy–lysosomal pathway. Enhancement of mitophagy has also been reported to abolish the neuronal hyperphosphorylation of tau in Alzheimer’s disease and rescue memory impairment in transgenic mice. This evidence concerns the gene MAPT and memory impairment.
