HP and Thrombocytopenia: Evaluation will reveal schistocytes on blood smear, elevated LDH, low or absent haptoglobin, thrombocytopenia, and elevated total bilirubin levels.17 Schistocytes are fragments of damaged red blood cells formed from the excessive wall shear stress on red blood cells in MAHA; they can be visualized on blood smear as helmet cells or irregular, triangular, and crescent-shaped cells lacking central pallor.18
