SOD1 and Alzheimer disease: Interestingly, oligodendroglia express low levels of both manganese SOD (the major detoxifying SOD in the cell) and GSH, making them particularly vulnerable to damage from oxidative stress, a phenomenon that has been observed in multiple white matter pathologies such as spinal cord injury (SCI), MS, schizophrenia (SCZ), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and Alzheimer’s disease (AD; Thorburne and Juurlink, 1996; Pinteaux et al., 1998; Holley et al., 2011; Spaas et al., 2021).
