Using mass cytometry in murine atherosclerosis, we have recently shown that in murine aorta, CD11c is predominantly expressed by macrophages and DCs.28 We have also shown that aortic CD11c+ macrophages are the only subset of macrophages whose representation increases during atherogenesis.29 Aortic intima resident macrophages express CD11c and have a pro-atherogenic role in murine models.30 To date, less is known regarding the cellular identity of CD11c myeloid cells in the human atherosclerotic plaque. This evidence concerns the gene ITGAX and atherosclerosis.
