NFKB1 and Alzheimer disease: Increased levels of non-aggregated forms of Aβ, significant neuronal and synaptic loss in the hippocampus, and increases in pro-inflammatory cytokine production and the activation of NF-kB were observed after the ablation of reactive astrocytes in an AD model [135], implying their role in amyloid peptide clearance and the control of neuroinflammation in AD progression.
