In RA, increased expression of BMP2, -6 and -7 observed in synovial fluid of RA patients indicated the role of BMPs in the development of this disease, probably by inducing proinflammatory phenotype of endothelial cells, stimulating adhesion of monocytes to the endothelium and, additionally, osteoclast differentiation, which subsequently leads to the bone loss observed in RA patients (157). This evidence concerns the gene BMP2 and rheumatoid arthritis.
