Autophagy proteins such as P62, Beclin-1, and LC3 (which are required for autophagosome biogenesis/maturation) regulate selective autophagy, cell survival, cell death, oxidative stress, DNA repair, and inflammation and play important roles in several diseases, such as diabetes and obesity (Guan et al. 2016; Lee and Lee 2016; Fan et al. 2018). This evidence concerns the gene SQSTM1 and diabetes mellitus.
