We consecutively enrolled 217 patients during the study period (table, figure 1, appendix p 34), as described previously.13,14 At the time of admission to hospital, 164 (76%) of 217 patients had a CD4 count of less than 200 cells per mL, 48 (22%) were taking antiretroviral therapy, and 122 (56%) had been receiving P jirovecii pneumonia prophylaxis. The gene discussed is CD4; the disease is susceptibility to pneumonia measurement.
