IL5 and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: Therefore, studying eosinophils as determinants of quantitative lung function is a powerful way of understanding their role in the development of fixed airflow obstruction such as in COPD.17 18 Investigating causality between eosinophils and fixed airflow obstruction is pertinent given interest in the potential use of mepolizumab in COPD9–12; evidence for causality of eosinophils in a wider range of respiratory phenotypes could suggest that anti-IL5 agents (designed to lower eosinophils) might be helpful in conditions beyond asthma.
