PTGS2 and viral infectious disease: The proposed treatment recommendations (17) are based on three pillars: (i) intervene at the very onset of mild/moderate symptoms at home; (ii) start therapy as early as possible after the family doctor has been contacted by the patient, without awaiting the results of a nasopharyngeal swab; (iii) rely on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, especially relatively selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors (18, 19), an approach that aims to limit excessive host inflammatory responses to viral infection (16, 17).
