G6PD and Jaundice: NF is contraindicated in pregnant patients at term (38–42 weeks gestation), during labour and delivery, when the onset of labour is imminent, and in neonates less than 1 month of age.18,19 This is because of the possibility of haemolytic anaemia, the result of increased destruction of red blood cells (RBCs) and consequent RBC reduced life-span, releasing haemoglobin, as well as neonatal jaundice resulting from undiagnosed glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency or immature erythrocyte enzyme systems in newborns.
