Previous studies indicated that AQP7 and AQP11 are mainly involved in the outflow channel of tissue water in the retinal nerve fiber layer and RPE layer, and AQP11 deletion at Müller glia plasma cell membranes may result in weakened capacity of cells to reduce cell volume through water outflow, which gives rise to cell swelling and consequently fatal retinal edema in ERU and other retinal diseases as well like DME [8]. This evidence concerns the gene AQP7 and retinal edema.
