Although it remains to be determined if SOM cell inhibitory synapses demonstrate learning-induced changes (Chiu et al., 2018; Udakis et al., 2020), mTORC1-dependent axonal sprouting by CA1 SOM cells takes place in the CACNA1A mouse model of epilepsy which is characterized by impaired synaptic inhibition by Pvalb interneurons (Jiang et al., 2018). The gene discussed is CACNA1A; the disease is epilepsy.
