The mitophagy pathway has been elucidated through the study of the PD-associated genes PINK1 and PRKN. While knockout mouse models for these genes do not show evident neuronal phenotypes, Drosophila models carrying Pink1 and Parkin knockouts were successfully used to show that Pink1 and Parkin work in the same pathway to control mitochondrial health [142–145]. Here, PINK1 is linked to Parkinson disease.
