Metabolic syndrome encompasses a spectrum of disorders, including central obesity, atherogenic dyslipidemia (ie, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C], elevated triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B–containing lipoproteins), elevated blood pressure, elevated blood glucose, and prothrombotic and proinflammatory states (1).
