Previous studies demonstrated that human umbilical cord MSCs adapt to an epithelial phenotype when co-cultured with human salivary gland biopsies of SS patients, and bone marrow-derived MSCs showed epithelial differentiation potential when cultured in the conditioned media with keratinocyte growth factor, epidermal growth factor, hepatocyte growth factor, and insulin-like growth factor, which indicate that MSCs can differentiate into epithelial lineage under appropriate conditions [51,52]. The gene discussed is HGF; the disease is synovial sarcoma.
