Very recent studies have distinguished two distinct subsets of neutrophils in the context of the myocardial infarction: N1 that are proinflammatory and antitumoral cells, characterized by a higher level of intercellular adhesion molecule- (ICAM-) 1 expression and high secretion of IL-12, CCL3, and IFN-γ-induced protein 10 (IP-10)/ CXCL10; N2 that exhibit anti-inflammatory and protumoral characteristics, with a high cell surface expression of C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 2 (CXCR2) and high secretion levels of IL-8, IL-10, and CCL2 [108, 109].
